Did God Lie?

Did God Lie?

Did God lie to Adam and Eve when He warned them not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil?  In Genesis 2:17 God tells Adam that “in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”  Yet they didn’t die that day, and Adam lived for nearly a thousand years!

The answer, as always, can be found in the Bible.  Nearly 4,000 years after Adam and Eve walked out of the Garden of Eden for the last time, Jesus Christ walked into the Garden of Gethsemane  hours before His death.  As he entered the darkness of the garden, Jesus told His disciples, “My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death” (Matt. 26:38).  He was quoting from Isaiah 53:12, a prophecy that predicts the suffering of the Messiah:  “He hath poured out His soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors.”  When Jesus entered Gethsemane that night, the guilt of every sin, including Adam and Eve’s, was placed on Him.

Now here is the amazing part!  Biblically, the day begins at sunset (see Genesis 1 and Psalm 55:17).  Jesus entered Gethsemane after sunset on Thursday evening, or, according to Biblical reckoning, in the early hours of Friday.  Less than 24 hours later, Christ was dead, having paid the penalty for sin.  Praise God that Divine justice and mercy meet in Jesus Christ!
